Functional Testing

What is Functional Laboratory Testing?

Functional laboratory testing is available when working with nutrition clients, to get deeper insights into imbalances in the body. The necessity for functional testing is decided on a case by case basis and in-line with a nutrition client’s budget.

Functional tests can help identify the causes and imbalances that are contributing to a client’s sub-optimal health and inform concrete actions to correct any imbalances. We work with highly reputable laboratories such as Genova Diagnostics, BioVIs and BioLab.

On this page you can find out more about our Nutritional Therapy service and they types of functional laboratory tests that we offer.

Nutritional Therapy & Functional Laboratory Service Includes

Initial Consultations

Prior to the Initial Consultation clients will be required to fill in a questionnaire, including a three day food diary, as well as send any test results relevant to their case. Working with one of our experienced Nutritional Therapists in Den Haag you will identify and prioritise the health problems and goals you would like to address.

The initial appointment will last approximately 60 minutes. During which, a detailed case history will be taken – looking at the interactions between genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that can impact health and chronic disease. The information from the pre-appointment questionnaire and any previous test results will also be considered. Working with our nutritional therapist in Den Haag you will identify and prioritise the health concerns you would like to address.

From this a unique and manageable nutrition and lifestyle plan will be devised based on the individual client’s needs and health goals. The nutritional therapist will also be able to arrange private functional tests such as allergy tests, nutritional status, digestive and hormone profiles, to help build a clearer picture of your health status and how it can be improved upon with diet and, where appropriate, supplementation.

Functional Test Options

Relevant functional tests will be selected by the Nutritional Therapist after a thorough investigation of client symptoms in the initial consultation. Tests include:

Gastrointestinal (GI) Tests
GI tests evaluate the health of the gastrointestinal tract, assessing digestion, absorption, mircrobiome balance, gut permeability and metabolic markers. Tests include comprehensive stool analysis, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), leaky gut and parasites. Testing may be via stool or breath tests.

Organic Acid Test
This test gives an overview of the metabolic state of the client, assessing the utilisation of nutrients consumed and their transformation to energy as well as markers for dysbiosis (gut health) and neurotransmitter function. A simple urine test.

Comprehensive Thyroid Panel
A thorough investigation of thyroid health which includes TSH, free T3, free T4 as well as autoimmune antibodies. This test gives a clear picture of any imbalances with thyroid function and is a blood test.

Micronutrient Status Test
A blood test which assesses vitamin and mineral levels in the body to identify any deficiencies or imbalances.

Food Allergies, Intolerances and Sensitivities
For clients showing signs of skin, respiratory or digestive allergic responses. Blood tests.

Female Hormone Panel
This test can identify hormonal imbalances that could be the root cause of disorders such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), problems with fertility and irregular periods. The tests are conducted via blood serum or saliva. Male hormone panel also available (eg andropause symptoms).

Pyrrole Disorder (Pyroluria)
A simple urine test to assess levels of pyrroles in the urine. Raised levels of pyrroles can lead to nutrient deficiencies such as B6, Zinc, Magnesium and Manganese.

SIBO Breath Test Instructions

One of the most complicated tests that we offer clients, through our test provider BioVis, is the Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) test.  Below you will find a video with detailed instructions for the home administration of the BioVis SIBO breath test.  This test should be completed only with a qualified practitioner.
